Hayride, pig roast, fishing derby, fireworks and more on tap for holiday weekend

The upcoming Fourth of July weekend will be a busy one at the Central Pennsylvania Wesleyan Campground, near New Columbia.

Activities kick off at 6 p.m. Friday, July 2, with hayrides followed by root beer floats at Pickett Hall.

From 8:30-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, enjoy a breakfast buffet including eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, scrapple and homemade donuts. D0nations are appreciated.

From 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 3, we will hold a fishing derby at the campground’s lake. Bring your own fishing gear or borrow one of the poles available (while supplies last). Nightcrawlers and meal worms will also be available (again, as supplies last) compliments of Clark’s Wiggly Worm and the Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association. Prizes will be awarded in two categories (adults and youths) to whoever catches the most fish and the angler (in each category) who catches the longest (a leaderboard will be displayed during the event). All fishing for this derby is catch-and-release only.

From 1-3 p.m. Saturday, July 3, Pelican’s Shaved Ice will have a truck on the grounds with frozen treats (kind of like snow cones). The campground is covering the first $1 per cup, bringing the cost down to $2 per cup of shaved ice — with 12 flavors to choose from (plus one sugar-free option).

At 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, the annual pig roast barbecue pot luck will kick off at Pickett Hall. (Plus lots of other meats plus homemade French fries). Plan to attend and bring a side dish or dessert to share, as well as paper supplies for you and your family. There will be a donation box for the completion of the new basketball court. Additional seating will be available in the outside pavilion.

On Sunday, July 4, at 10:30 a.m., Pastor Lee Crossley will share the message at a worship service at Pickett Hall with Mark and Nora Lenig leading the music.

Finally, at dusk on Sunday, July 4, there will be a giant fireworks display at the campground’s playground area. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the show!
